I'm glad this is normal. I thought my personal experiences with clients were unique; good to know this is common. I just gained more confidence. Thanks for sharing.

Very common! I hope to do a part 2 of this article. So many other strange, odd, surprising and frustrating stories I have heard from students. I think it is hard to freelance without running into some odd situations. The good news is the positive stories can outweigh the negative over time.

For me clients ghost my services all the time especially, when they got to know the prices.... even though they like me or the samples I showed to them. It's normal to me now, at first I used to go mad for that 😆 😆

that is tough to let those clients go but they would have never made good clients anyways, when they did not want to respect you with the right prices. I had a hard time saying no to people and would accept very low pay all the time when I first started. It burned me very badly so I am glad you are sticking with your prices!

Funny how much of all this goes on, with only a year and a half of part-time freelancing most of this has happened to me, you live and learn.

I don't take any of it to heart when it happens just find a solution to prevent it from happening again with hope.

Great article. This was some good advice on handling clients and what to look for in a good working relationship. Question, I have seen Job boards like linkedin and indeed asking for jobs seekers in creative feilds to take design or coding aptitude tests in order to move forward with the job application. Will this trend continue and why are these directed at creatives most of the time? Thank you.

Thank you Tim, I do think the trend will continue. Design is very subjective and employers want to test out skills before moving forward. I think what gets out of hand is some of the time requirements of some of these "tests". Some are reasonable and professional while others require too much work (unpaid). I think the challenge moving forward will be to parse through all of that and make sure you only do tests with reputable well known companies.

Hay Lindsay, I have taken a few tests of this nature for big well-known firms and small family firms, the standard seems to be a 15-20 minute task that shows the main skills they are looking for. I think 15-20 minutes on something like this is a reasonable timeline, anything longer is just looking for free work.

absolutely, thank you for sharing your data. I think anything that you can do in an hour (maybe 2) or less is totally reasonable. A length that would be a typical interview length.
